“Of course, I'm scared. I'm scared about everything. I'm scared about global warming, whether I paid my taxes correctly”—he huffed out a laugh at her—“scared that bears might get into my second-floor apartment because we live in Vermont, and those motherfuckers are crafty, so yeah. Of course, I'm scared of losing my closest person because I'm no good at relationships, and you mean a lot to me. If we did this, it would be….” She shook her head, caught in her emotions. Overwhelming tension clawed at her throat, and she fought back tears.

“Heavy,” he said. He nodded and chewed on his lip. “All right. Just friends.”

The rest of the evening, they kept their distance from each other. They were two tigers circling each other in a small cage, always within a ten-foot radius of one another but never getting closer than they had to.

After a few awkward hours, Max finally begged off to go to sleep. The power was still off and Josie had opted to stay on the couch again, given it was nearest to the fireplace. Max had a small fireplace in his bedroom that he stoked to heat the room so he wouldn’t freeze. Maybe they'd be lucky, and the power would be back on before they woke up in the morning.

Josie fell into a fitful sleep of replaying their kiss again and again and again and again in her mind.
